These are sheets with a thickness of about 1 millimeter that can send an electric current just by placing it near an electric product without the use of a cord. The sheets are plastic with small embedded coils of wound electric wire and transmit electricity by taking advantage of a phenomenon called electromagnetic induction. In December 2006 the research group led by Professor Takayasu Sakurai of the University of Tokyo succeeded in developing such a sheet. If this technology can be commercialized, it will enable cordless use of computers, vacuum cleaners, and nearly all other electric products. |
