Basic Law on Science and Technology

Promotion of science and technology is considered one of the most important issues for Japan, and this law is central to the realization of a nation built on the creativity of science and technology. It was passed by the Diet members of all parties in 1995. Specifically, the law calls for (1) a balanced promotion of science and technology covering basic, applied, and development research, (2) commitment of national and local public organizations to promote science and technology, and (3) preparation of basic science and technology plans by the government and the securing of budgetary resources to implement those plans.
