A light-emitting diode (LED) that emits many colors—including white and intermediate colors—has been developed through joint research between Kyoto University and Nichia Corporation. In general, LEDs have a monochromatic light source and use fluorescent material to put out white light, but this new LED does not use fluorescent material. Moreover, its luminous efficiency exceeds that of fluorescent light, and it is characterized by low power consumption. LEDs have been developed for the colors of red, blue, green and the intermediate colors of orange, yellow, and purple. With this new LED, however, a wider range of intermediate colors is possible.
