This is an attempt to create places where scientists and members of the general public can casually converse about science over coffee and light refreshments. It has attracted considerable attention as a new means of communication to deepen understanding of science and create links between scientists and the public. There is a monthly gathering in the city of Sendai, which has been organized by Tohoku University since August 2005, and similar events are being held in regions across the country.
