Abstract; The MacDonald-type [3+1] condensation gives rise to amido type meso-free .BETA.-alkyl-substituted N-confused porphyrins (1). A single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis of the corresponding monohydrochloride salt revealed a chloride bridged dimer structure. On the basis of NMR, 1-HCl exists as dimers in dichloromethane solution. The thermodynamic parameters for the Cl- mediated dimer formation in CD2Cl2 were determined. (author abst.)
