Abstract; There is a strong structural similarity between nitric oxide reductase and cytochrome oxidase for the presence and topology of their twelve transmembrane helices and metal centers, suggesting that terminal oxidases evolved from NO reductase. The main difference between them is for the non-heme center coupled with a high spin heme, non-heme iron center in NO reductase and Cu B in cytochrome oxidase. A proton transfer pathway leading from cytoplasm to the binuclear center was found. This pathway is supposed as to have been converted to the vectorial proton transfer pathway in the terminal oxidases. (author abst.)
