Abstract; In this paper, we analyze the energy release rate for a frictional crack subjected to remote proportional compressive loads using the finite element method. The energy release rate is calculated by using the path-independent E-integral of the complementary strain energy type, which is path independent even at the onset of crack kinking. We find that the E-integral gives the energy release rate under the compressive loads with a high accuracy. (author abst.)
