Abstract; The 1995 Hyogoken-Nanbu Earthquake caused unprecedented damage in Hanshin-Awaji area. In order to evaluate the damage of structures in this area, it is important to estimate the distribution of earthquake ground motion. However, since the number of strong ground motion records is not enough, it is necessary to estimate the distribution using other data sources. In this study, the relationships between the building damage and the ground motion indices(PGA,PGV,SI and JMA intensity) were constructed using the building damage data compiled by the Building Research Institute and the recorded motions. The fragility curves obtained for residential buildings were then employed to estimate ground motion distributions in the 1995 Hyogoken-Nanbu Earthquake. (author abst.)
