| Abstract; The results of previous research have generally shown that computer-generated average face images are less distinctive and more attractive than original face pictures. In order to investigate the characteristics of average faces in terms of distinctiveness, attractiveness and memorability, we produced average faces by combining varying number of from 2 photos to 30 photos. One group of subjects were asked to rate distinctiveness and attractiveness of each average face, and recognition memory test were conducted for another group of subjects. The results showed that as the number of photos used for the average face increased, the face was judged to be less distinctive, more attractive and memorability was decreased. We also found that when using more than 10 photos for the average face, there seems to be the difference in distinctiveness and attractiveness among average face images. (author abst.) |
