Abstract; In order to investigate into discrimination of normal facial expressions and cognitive structure for them in Japanese, facial expressions of nine (or six) basic affects of fourteen students (11 males, 3 females) were recorded and exposed to 186 students who were asked to discriminate them into six categories (happy, surprise, fear, anger, disgust, sadness). Results indicated that basic facial expressions except for fear were appropriately recognized. The results of multivariate analysis showed that cognitive categories for fear, sadness, contempt, interest, shame were relatively close to surprise, disgust, anger, surprise, happiness.
