Abstract; The Mo/Fe/S cubane cluster Cp*2Mo2Fe2S4Cl2(2) was successfully linked by a series of dithiolate ligands to give di-, tri-, and poly-cubane compounds. The reactions of 2 with Li2edt and Li2pdt in THF gave cyclic tricubane clusters[Cp*2Mo2Fe2S4]3(edt)3(3) and [Cp*2Mo2Fe2S4]3(pdt)3(4) in high yields, respectively. The analogous reaction with Li2(1,2-bdt) also gave a cyclic tricubane[Cp*2Mo2Fe2S4]3(1,2-bdt)3(5), along with a trace amount of Cp*2Mo2Fe2S4(1,2-bdt)2(6). The dicubane cluster[Cp*2Mo2Fe2S4]2(1,3-bdt)2(7) was prepared by the reaction of 2 with Li2(1,3-bdt). Treatment of 2 with Li2(1,4-bdt) resulted in the formation of a insoluble solid, which was formulated as polymeric[Cp*2Mo2Fe2S4(1,2-bdt)].INF.(8). On the other hand, the reaction of 2 with NaEt2dtc generated only a single cubane cluster Cp*2Mo2Fe2S4(Et2dtc)2(9) in 71% yield, where Et2dtc coordinates at each iron atom in an intriguing monodenate fashion. The X-ray crystal structure analyses are performed for 3,4,5,6,7, and 9. (author abst.)
