Abstract; We synthesized dithienosiloles and dithienodisilacyclohexadienes which have a bithiophene system bridged by a mono- or disilanylene unit at the 3,3'-positions. Their electrochemical and optical properties were studied with respect to their UV and emission spectra, and cyclic voltammograms(CVs), which suggest low-lying LUMO of these tricyclic compounds, in accordance with the prediction based on the ab initio calculations on simplified model compounds at the RHF/6-31G level. We also report electron-transporting properties of the silicon bridged bithiophenes and the synthesis of polymers with dithienosilole units in their backbone. (author abst.)
