Abstract; The electron transfer oxidation and subsequent cobalt-carbon bond dissociation of vitamin B12 model complexes were investigated using cobaloximes, (CH)2Co(R)(L), where R=Me,Et,Ph, and PhCH2, L=a substituted pyridine, and DH=dimethylglyoxime as the B12 model complexes and [Fe(bpy)3](PF6)3(pby=2,2'-bipyridine) as an oxidant. A comparison of cobalt-carbon bond dissociation enthalpies and entropies of [(DH)2CoIV(R)(L)]+ with those of (DH)2CoIII(R)(L) reveals that the cobalt(IV)-carbon bond is significantly weaker than the corresponding cobalt(III)-carbon bond.
