Abstract; As a series of structural studies on catalytic complexes concerning the polymerization of olefin, X-ray structure analysis has been carried out on Li-Ni complex; C8H24Ni2Li4(THF)4 having styrene polymerization activity. It is revealed that this complex is quite a new type of cluster compound having mixed metal octahedron with basal plane by four lithium atoms bearing THF ligands, and with two apices occupied by two nickel atoms. Eight methyl carbon atoms cap to eight faces of octahedron. This is the first octahedron cluster complex having polymerization activities for olefin. From the investigation of molecular structure, it may be said that the existence of strong interaction between carbon and lithium atoms without direct binding is the key point for olefin polymerization.
