Abstract;Photolysis of cyclooligogermanes, (R2Ge)n, involved ring contraction to (R2Ge)n-1 with extrusion of germylenes. These germylenes were trapped with 2,3-dimethyl-1,3-butadiene and CCl4 to give the corresponding trapping products in high yields. The mechanism of photolysis of cyclooligogermanes was investigated by laser flash photolysis, trapping experiments, and matrix isolation experiments. (author abst.)
