Abstract;{Tris[2-(dimethylamino)phenyl]germyl}lithium (1) has been prepared from the corresponding hydrogermane(2) with tert-butyllithium. X-ray analysis of 1 shows that 1 exists as a mono-chelated monomer, where the lithium atom is coordinated with one of the amino groups and with two THF molecules. In solution, however, two species are observed in 7Li, 1H, and 13C NMR spectra. Variable temperature NMR studies have revealed that the mono-chelated monomer and a non-chelated dimer are in equilibrium. Reaction of 1 with elemental selenium gives 1,3-diselena-bis[2-(dimethylamino)phenyl]-2,4-digermetane(6). The mechanism of fromation of 6 is discussed. (author abst.)
