Abstract;Three organizations of the construction industry - Japan Federation of Construction Contractors, Inc., Japan Civil Engineering Contractors Association,Inc. and Building Contractors Society decided an "independent action plan of the construction industry for environmental preservation (the first edition)" in November, 1996 and the "same plan (the second edition)" in October. 1998. This paper presents the efforts of the construction industry concerning the 5 items taken up in the action plan : measures against global warming ; construction of recycling-type economy and society ; preservation of tropical- rain forests ; construction of environmental management systems ; and preservation of ecosystem. This paper also describes the history of activities of the construction industry concerning the environment and the trends in and out of the country.
