Abstract; The change in F-ratio when a beam of light goes through an optical fiber is examined for a single-mode fiber (core radius=9.MU.m). Our previous study (Makita and Imai 1988) showed that, for multi-mode fibers, the F-ratio of the output beam is smaller (i.e. the beam spreads) than the F-ratio of the input beam. Such degradation in F-ratio is not seen in a single-mode fiber because the output beam's F-ratio is fixed by the mode propagating in the fiber. (author abst.)
