| Abstract;Omeprazole 20mg once daily was orally administered 131 patients with erosive and ulcerative reflux esophagitis resistant to H2 receptor antagonists. Its efficacy and safety were investigated and the following results were obtained. 1) Endoscopic healing rates were 77.2% at 8 weeks, 56.3% and 27.8% at 12 and 16 weeks as to extension cases, respectively, and cumulative healing rate at 16 weeks was 84.0%. 2) "Markedly improved" rates in subjective and objective symptoms improvement were 86.5% at 8 weeks, and 50.0% and 62.5% at 12 and 16 weeks as to extension cases, respectively. 3) "Markedly improved" rates in overall improvement were 81.1% at 8 weeks and 55.0% as to extension cases. 4) "Safe" rates in overall safety were 70.9% at 8 weeks and 80.0% as to extension cases. 5) Serum gastrin levels increased after administration, but it only slightly exceeded the upper limit of the normal range. These results suggest that omeprazole is clinically effective and well-tolerated in patients with reflux esophagitis resistant to H2 receptor antagonists. (author abst.) |
