| Abstract;Etodolac(Hypen) is a pyranocarboxylic-acid-derived nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug(NSAID) that suppresses prostaglandin biosynthesis via selective inhibition of cyclooxygenase-2(COX-2). We evaluated the longterm efficacy of etodolac by using the Japanese Orthopaedic Association(JOA) scoring system for the first time in patients with osteoarthritis. After etodolac administration all of four scores significantly increased compared with the baseline. Significant improvement in the swelling score indicates etodolac has a superior anti-inflammatory activity as well as a superior analgesic effect. Furthermore there were no differences between younger(<65yr) and older(.GEQ.65yr) age groups in either efficacy or safety. Adverse events were observed in eight patients during the trial; most of them were gastrointestinal symptoms, but none of them were severe. We conclude that the COX-2 selective inhibitor etodolac, with its good compliance is a useful NSAID in the long-term treatment of osteoarthritis. (author abst.) |
