Abstract; In natural environment, scenes and objects are composed of various colors (variegated). Thus, natural scenes and objects are represented by distributions in color space. Color distribution may be a cue to discriminate and identify the scenes and objects. In this study, to clarify how the visual system use information about color distributions, discrimination sensitivities for patterns defined by various types of color distributions were measured. The results showed that only certain types of color distributions can be discriminated. The results also suggest that the visual system are sensitive to difference in "main axis" of color distributions. (author abst.)
