Abstract; The authors report a case of unilateral corneal amyloidosis presumably caused by trichiasis. The patiant was a 56 years old female who had been consulting the referring ophthalmologist for trichiasis of her right eye. Two years ago, white mass was noticed on the surface of the cornea, but her consultations were occasional. The lesion gradually increased in size and resulted as a source of irritation that prompted her to our department. Slitlamp examination of the cornea revealed a white excrescence with a diameter of 2.5mm. The lesion was excised and examined by light microscopy. Large deposits of an amorphous eosinophilic material were observed beneath the atrophic epithelium. Amyloid was detected in these deposits using Congo red stain and polarized light. Neither vascularization nor inflamatory cells was observed. Immunohistochemical test for protain AA was negative. During one year of follow up period after keratectomy, no reccurence has been observed. (author abst.)
