| Abstract; We examined the change in apoptotic extent in cases of prostate cancer following endocrine therapy and the extent of apoptosis in cases of relapsed prostate cancer. Surgical and biopsy specimens were obtained from 32 patients who had received endocrine therapy and from 13 patients with relapsed prostate cancer. Histological sections of these samples stained by hematoxylin and eosin, immunohistochemistry for the anti-Ki-67 monoclonal antibody, were examined with a light microscope, and apoptotic indices (percentage of apoptotic cells in cancer cells) and mitotic indices were evaluated. After endocrine therapy, there were degenerative changes in the cancer cells as well as structural changes. There were no significant differences between the apoptotic indices of pre- and post-therapy. However, endocrine therapy induced short-term post-therapy period, while inducing short-term apoptosis in a minority of cases. Moreover, increased apoptotic and mitotic indices were noted in cases with relapsed prostate cancer. The results of the present and future prospecutive studies may contribute to creating effective therapies against prostate cancer. (author abst.) |
