| Abstract;Over a period of two years (1996-1997) 248 patients with urolithiasis visited the Okinawa Prefectural Hospital on Miyako island. Since urology services are only available at our hospital, we are required to see virtually all the patients with urolithiasis on the island, which has a population of 57,000 people. A total of 102 stone specimens was obtained either by surgery or by spontaneous passage from 74 men and 28 women with a mean age of 48.6 years. These were available for analysis. The stones consisted of calcium oxalate and/or calcium phosphate in 64 patients, uric acid in 29, struvate in 8, and cystine in 1. The high prevalence of uric acid stones in men prompted us to study their diet and liquid intake, revealing that the high alcohol consumption levels among the men in this area differ significantly from other areas of Japan.
