Abstract; We observed tomographic findings of the retina before and after vitrectomy for macular disorders using optical coherence tomography. Full-thickness macular holes had perifoveal intraretinal splitting. After successful surgery, the macula acquired normal foveal configuration along with disappearance of perifoveal intraretinal splitting. In preretinal macular fibrosis, the retina was swollen with fluid accumulation in the outer retina. The retinal thickness decreased and physiological foveal pit was restored after vitrectomy. OCT showed various aspects of diabetic macular edema, which included retinal swelling, cystoid macular edema(CME) and serous retinal detachment. After vitrectomy, retinal thickness decreased with increased tissue density. Intraretinal cysts gradually flattenes. OCT proved to be of value in assessing the surgical outcome of vitrectomy for macular disorders at histological level. (author abst.)
