Abstract; The changes of the surface properties of graphite with direct fluorination in the temperature range from room temperature to 300 .DEG.C. were investigated by measuring AFM, STM and XPS. An AFM was used to measure the short- and long-range hydrophobic forces between a fluorinated carbon and carbon plate. The hydrophobicity was controlled by fluorinated temperature. The forces vs distance curves can be fitted by both exponential and power laws. The measured hydrophobic forces increase with contact angle, perhaps the most conventient measure of hydrophobicity, THe hydrophobic surface comes from formation of the C-F covalent bonding, according to the XPS analysis.
