Abstract;Between April 1995 and September 1997, prostatic needle biopsies were performed in 93 men whose serum prostate-specific antigen(PSA) levels were higher than 4ng/ml. Prostate cancer was detected in 32 patients(34.4%) by the first biopsy, in 2 patients(2.2%) by repeat biopsy and in 5 patients(5.4%) by TUR-P or open prostatectomy. Neither PSA levels nor PSA density(PSAD) were correlated with age in the patients without prostate cancer. The median PSA levels in cancer patients were not significantly higher than those in the patients without cancer. The median PSAD in cancer patients was not significantly higher than that in the patients without cancer. Among 11 patients with a PSAD of less than 0.15, only 1 patient was demonstrated to be suffering from prostate cancer. These results suggest that the use of PSAD may be helpful in identifying the patients with prostate cancer. (author abst.)
