Abstract;Silene aomorensis, a threatened species restricted to a limited area of the north of Honshu of Japan, was studied with respect to a variation of petal shape and chromosome number which has not been reported earlier. Based on individuals from five populations of Akita and Aomori Prefectures, the species is greatly varied in petal shape, particularly in its length and width but has no gap as clear enough to distinguish one population from the other. S. aomorensis was found to have 2n=72 (probably a hexaploid of x=12), a number rare in the genus and unknown in other Japanese species. The possible relationship to S. wahlbergella, which has been suggested earlier, was also briefly discussed based on morphological evidence. (author abst.)
