Abstract;Somatic chromosome numbers for nine species native to Papua New Guinea in nine genera of eight families, and karyotypes of eight of them in mefistematic cells of young leaves are reported. All the nine species and six of the eight genera were studied for the first time cytologically. The chromosomes number of 2n=20 was found in Cansjera leptostachya (Opiliaceae), 2n=32 in Dracontomelon dao (Anacardiaceae), 2n=30 in Endiandra brassii (Lauraceae), 2n=48 in Endospermum moluccanum (Euphorbiaceae), 2n=44 in Gymnacranthera paniculata (Myristicaceae), 2n=44 in Haplolobus floribundus (Burseraceae), 2n=32 in Mishocarpus grandissimus (Sapindaceae), 2n=22 in Pimeleodenderon amboinicum (Euphorbiaceae), and 2n=28 in Siphonodon celastrineus (Celastraceae).
