| Abstract; The distribution pattern of vegetation on subalpine of Changbai mountain in northeast China was derived by using two-date satellite imagery of JERS-1/OPS-VNIR. The vegetation in the subalpine can be roughly described as a mosaic formed by patches of evergreen species, summer green species, mixed species, and gaps. Evergreen conifer forest was dominant in the subalpine, but stands occupied with deciduous species including larch and broadleaved trees presented a large proportion. The mixed stands consisting of evergreen conifer and summer green species are considered the building phase of succession. Windfall is a major force creating gaps which are important units for maintaining the climax status. Larch plays an important role for keeping the climax conifer forest, because it benefits the conifer species by providing the saplings with suitable environment. (author abst.) |
