| Abstract; The distributions of the naturally occurring radionuclides 238U, 234U, 232Th, 230Th, 228Th and 226Ra in hot spring and river water within the Peitou area at the northern part of Taiwan were studied by using the alpha-spectrometric and the liquid scintillation counting methods. The contents of uranium and thorium in these water were calculated from the radioactivity of 238U and 232Th, respectively. In general on the water temperatures of the hot springs, namely, Dihreh-guu, Chinshan, Hisngi-lu, Matsao and Liuhuang-guu, are very high, 50-98.DEG.C., except Matsao hot spring which is 26.DEG.C.. The acidity of these hot spring water is high with pH 1.6-3.4, which may influence the pH of river water when they flew into. The radioactivities of uranium and thorium isotopes in natural river water (pH-7.0) are very low, but there is a tendency that they increase with decreasing pH in the region of pH<5.0. The concentration ratios of uranium to thorium are less than 0.6 in hot spring water, whereas they are larger than 1 in river water. (author abst.) |
