| Abstract;Work in the area of radio and nuclear chemistry started almost along with establishment of Indian Atomic Energy Programme and first prototype radiochemistry laboratory was established in the Atomic Energy Establishment at Trombay (AEET) in 1958. The laboratory had an active area of 375 Sq.m. and was designed as a Class A radioactivity laboratory. Most of the work programme in the area of radiochemistry was initiated in this laboratory. The present Radiochemistry Laboratory which was designed in 1965 was operational in 1969 and has 14 laboratories of 70 sq.m. area each, built on modular fashion with 10-12 air and required safety devices for continuous monitoring. The area of research which are presently being carried out in Radiochemistry Division are (1) Nuclear Chemistry (2) Actinide & Process Chemistry (3) Solid State and Analytical Spectroscopy and development of manpower and help to other educational institute in their research in these areas. The aritcle highlights some of the research activities in the area of Nuclear Chemistry and Actinide Chemistry. The areas of research in nuclear chemistry are reactor and accelerator based research in nuclear fission, nuclear reactions, nuclear spectroscopy and neutron activation analysis. While that in the actinide chemistry are to understand the basic as well as applied aspects of chemistry of actinides with a view to its use in separation processes of actinides required for reprocessing and waste management. This being the first symposia organised by the Japan Society of Nuclear and Radiochemistry, a brief mention about the activities of a similar society, from India "Indian Association of Nuclear Chemists and Allied Scientists" (IANCAS), which was formed in 1981, is made.
