Abstract;Eight new neutorn-rich lanthanide isotopes produced in the proton-induced fission of 238U have been identified using the JAERI on-line isotope separator (JAERI-ISOL) coupled to a gas-jet transport system. For six of these, each half-life was determined: ,159Pm (2 .+-. -1 s),161Sm (4.8 .+-. 0.8 s), 165Gd (10.3 .+-. 1.6 s), 166Tb (21 .+-. 6 s), 167Tb (19.4 .+-. 2.7 s) and 168Tb (8.2 .+-. 1.3 s). Furthermore, the first 2+ and 4+ states of the daughter nuclides 166Dy and 168Dy were derived through the beta- decay studies of 166Tb and 168Tb. Excited states of the daughter nucleus 167Dy has also been derived for the first time. The observed half-lives were compared with theoretical calculations. The derived level energies in 166,167,168Dy were discussed in terms of nuclear deformation. (author abst.)
