Abstract; To study the fission mechanism of americium-242m having the largest cross section for thermal-neutron-induced fission, an americium-242m sample was irradiated with thermal neutrons at the Kyoto University Research Reactor. Fission fragments were catched on an aluminum plate, which afterwards was sujected to gamma-ray spectrometry. In some runs, chemical separations were carried out. The mass and charge distributions obtained were compared to neighboring fissioning nuclei, and a disscussion on the mechanism was given. (author abst.)
