Abstract;Nature of the chemical bonds and the structural role of the rare earth elements in oxide glass have not been investigated satisfactorily so far. 151Eu Moessbauer spectra of calcium aluminate glass containing a small amount of iron indicate high covalency in the Eu-O bonds. Debye temperatures obtained from the temperature dependency of the absorption area and that of the isomer shift indicate that Eu(III) substitutes Al(III), forming distorted EuO4tetrahedra. Heat treatment of the aluminate glass resulted in a distinct decrease both in the isomer shift and the quadrupole splitting, suggesting a decrease in the covalency and an increase in the symmetry, respectively.
