Abstract;Lichens are influenced by their growth environments and theconcentrations of elements in lichen thalli are directly correlated with theenvironmental levels. Since lichen lives a long life, it is possible toobserve the environment for long peiod. To examine the possibility oflichens as environmental indicators, we studied characteristics of elementalconcentrations in lichens and measured caesium-137. Instrumental neutronactivation analysis has been employed for 14 elements. Concentrations inParmelia (s.lat.) were more than those of Cladonia(s.lat). 137Cs concentrations in Japan were measured by indicatorsof Cladonia species. There were some differences between variousareas in 137Cs concentrations. (author abst.)
