| Abstract;Round-robin tests between NASDA and NASA were conducted to examine the friction and wear behavior of solid lubricants(magnetron-sputtered MoS2, bonded MoS2, ion-plated silver, and ion-plated lead) in sliding contact with SUS440C stainless steel balls. The experiments were conducted at room temperature under the three types of environments: ultrahigh vacuum(below 2x10-6Pa), humid air(20.+-.2%RH), and dry nitrogen. The resultant films were characterized by scanning electron microscopy(SEM). Marked differences in friction and wear behavior resulted from the environmental conditions and the film materials. For example, in ultrahigh vacuum the coefficient of friction and endurance life of bonded MoS2 films were superior to those of other films. Also, results from the two organizations had good correspondences, which showed test methods and results to be valid. (author abst.) |
