Abstract;Functions and molecular mechanisms of Runt domain regulatory transcription factor(RD protein) in hematopoietic system of Drosophila melanogaster are described first. RD protein is classified into 2 types of Runt and Lozenge proteins, and both Runt domain and -VWRPY motif at C-terminal end are well preserved between RD protein of the fruit fly and mammalian AML1 protein. It is recently proven that lozenge gene is involved in differentiation of hematopoietic cells of the Drosophila. RD protein is then explained to play important roles in segmentation processes, sex determination, and compound eye differentiation, and to act as both transcriptional activator and suppressor to target genes. The function of transcriptional regulation is expressed differently in different cell types and target genes. Their possible interactions with other proteins are also discussed.
