Abstract;Surface microtopographies of illite particles were observed by Contact mode atomic force microscopy (CMAFM) and Tapping mode AFM (TMAFM) in air. The microtopographic images obtained by the two methods were compared mainly on the image (data) quality. Atomic scale surface imaging of muscovite by fluid CMAFM is also discussed in this paper. Some problems that arise in the AFM experiments are pointed out. (author abst.)
