| Abstract;Waveguide in-line optical devices using liquid crystal(LC) are useful for high integration and various functions in optical components. In this paper, such two kinds of devices are reported. One is a tunable wavelength filter using twisted nematic LC, which can be applied as a basic component of wavelength division multiplexed transmission systems. The tuning characteristics of the filter are analized using Jones matrix method and coupled mode theory. The other is an LC waveplate integrated into a polymer waveguide, which has a novel structure and potential for an optical circuit element used to transform the state of polarization of guided waves. The LC waveplate is designed to work as a half-waveplate, which behavior is confirmed. (author abst.) |
