Abstract;Chloroplast's functions damaged by excessive environmental stress bring about not only chloroplast dysfunction but also cellular and individual death of plant. As in chloroplasts not only primary metabolism occur but phytohormones are biosynthesized, chloroplasts may be involved in the development of plant via signal transduction pathways differing from metabolic regulation pathways. This paper introduces the knowledge especially on the effects of chloroplast functions on cytodifferentiation of plants. It also describes that the genetic transformation of chloroplast becomes possible, and the trial of the chloroplasts with low risk of recombinant gene diffusion due to maternal gene transfer system is underway to utilize chloroplast as an intracellular factory.
