Abstract; An infant with severely disturbed hearing had difficulty deepening interpersonal relationships and showed delayed make-believe play development before installation of a cochlear implant. Making contact with this infant during play therapy sessions, the author analyzed changes in the child's make-believe play development and quality of interpersonal relationships after fitting with an cochlear implant. Data obtained before and after installation of the cochlear implant(until the child was 4 yeares and 5 months old) and video tapes recording the child's make-believe play with the author and others were analyzed. The following results were obtained. Before installation of the cochlear implant, the child's make-believe play level(e.g., imitating the mother's motions) remained at the level of a 2-year-old. After the child began to wear the cochlear implant all day long, its make-believe play level advanced markedly: that is, from a 3-year-old to a 4-year-old level in only 4 months, counting from the 6th month after the beginning of all-day use of the cochlear implant. When development of the child's interpersonal relationships was assessed, using frequency of observance of other people's faces as an indicator, the frequency approximately doubled after beginning all-day use of the cochlear implant(average frequency: 31 observations before all-day use and 61 after beginning all-day use). Moreover. Before all-day use the child often gazed at other people as if watching; after beginning all-day use the child often looked at other people while expressing feelings. Development of make-believe play level overlapped with development of interpersonal relationships, indicating a close relationship between the two. (author abst.)
