Abstract; We observed double-ring sign, or double coutour of the lens capsule edge, in 16 eyes of 16 patients following cataract surgery during the foregoing 7 months. There was no adverse effect due to the double-ring sign on the postoperative course. All were advanced in age, averaging 74.9 years. It has been claimed that double-ring sign is prone to occur in eyes with splitting or irregularity in the anterior capsule which may be more frequent in senile persons. Double-ring sign develops due to partial splitting of the anterior capsule and may be the precursor of true exfoliation of the lens capsule. Its high incidence following cataract surgery suggests the potential frequency of true exfoliation in the general population. (author abst.)
