Abstract; The brain is composed of neurones which are very rich in the diversity. They areoriginally differentiated from the comparatively uniform nerve trunk cells. In the developmental process of the brain generating a multiple existence from such an uniform one, an intercellular mutual reaction through the membrane protein Notch assumes an imortant role. When Notch receives ligand stimulation from the ajacent cells, differentiation is inhibited through the inhibitory bHLH-type nerve differentiation factor Hes1 and Hes5. By this Notch route, it becomes possible to maintain the nerve trunk cells to produce various kinds of cells, as the result, the complicated brain is formed.
