Abstract;Biogenic amines are important in the synapse formation and maintenance. In the experiment which depleted biogenic amines to decrease the number of synapses, a long term potentiation was not registered from the hippocampus of the animal, and it was also proved that learning memory had been established, even if the synapses density lowered. Normal number of the synapses maintained by biogenic amines is indeed necessary for the maintenace of plasticity. It is conceivable that the functional depression of biogenic amines by infant neurogenic diseases or stress decreases the synapse number to cause mental retardation, impairment of the development. If such a view is right, it will be possible to restore the brain from the mental failure by the agonist administration etc..
