Abstract;A hospital ATM network was constructed as an infrastructure of the next generation hospital information system by us. Its basic concept was sharing of informations with security protection as well as the realization of rigid and high-speed operations. The network was structured with duplex ATM switches. VLAN's for hospital information system, department system and telemedicine were installed on the network. The telemedicine VLAN, which was connected with the hospital information system through a firewall, was linked to the Internet through a firewall compatible with VPN (Virtual Private Network). The VLAN for hospital information system was designed to have a higher priority than others. A server for information sharing was installed in the VLAN for telemedicine. The structure of this network made it possible to satisfy the conflicting demands for privacy of patient's information in the hospital information system and for the shared user of the telemedicine network. In addition, an information sharing was realized at a lower cost due to VPN. (author abst.)
