Abstract;Morphology, dry matter, stomatal dimension and leaf gas exchange characteristics of Japanese black soybean cv. Tanbaguro were studied. Plants were grown in pots at optimum growing season. Length of the roots per plant was grown up to 267 meter. Main stem length or the mean plant height was 66 cm. The main stems had 16 nodes. There were 15 branches per plant and their total length was 93 cm. Leaf area per plant grew up to 5660 cm2 of which the main stem leaves had 35% area and the rest 65% was from the leaves of branches. Average number of flowers borne per plant was 193. The number of pods grown per plant was 59. At the R5 stage, mean dry matter per plant was 86.1g. Leaves contained the highest proportion of dry matter (30.3%), followed by pods (28.4%). Branches shared only one third to that of the main stem. Abaxial stomata were bigger in size than those of adaxial surface. Area of individual stomatal aperture was also bigger on the abaxial surface but the total area of aperture per unit area of leaf surface was much higher on the adaxial surface due to higher frequency. The rates of net photosynthesis were higher at the earlier stages of growth. At V3, that was 25.3 .MU.molm-2s-1 which was slowly decreased to 3.1 .MU.molm-2s-1 at the R5 stage. The rate of dark respiration per unit leaf area did not change much throughout the stages of growth. (author abst.)
