Abstract;Heavy ion radiotherapy was started in June of 1994 using HIMAC facility, Heavy lon medical Accelerator in Chiba, at National Institute of Radiological Sciences. As of August of 1997, 301 patients have been treated using carbon beams. A basic research program was also started in October of 1994. The number of proposals accepted achieved to more than 100 including biology, physics and medicine in 1997. Various efforts are continuously made to improve localization of radiation dose by beam irradiatlon synchronlzed with a patient's breath, or to increase the available beam-time by introducing time-sharing-acceleration. New beam lines have been constructed for providing radioactive beams in order to verify a irradiated region. I would like to report here the present status of the HIMAC and some topics about improvements done recently. (author abst.)
