| Abstract; We investigated biological effects of heavy particle irradiation on central nervous system using histological and cellular methods. 1) Brain cells of new-born mice were primary-cultured, and then irradiated with X-rays and carbon ions. Cell kinetics studies using cell surface antibody and flowcytometry showed that microglia and astrocyte were sensitive and resistant, respectively, to irradiation with 2-16Gy of either radiation qualities. The sensitive cells were microglia and resistant cells were astrocyte. 2) We measured behavior and circadian rhythm of whole-brain irradiated mice. 3) Rats were irradiated to the spinal cord with various doses of carbon beam, the ED50 for paralysis was 15.5Gy.
