| Abstract;Analysis of pathologic effect of 27 patients treated with C-ions suggested that tumors with faster cell cycle speed indicated by Mitotic index of proliferating cell population (pMI) of 4% or larger were liable to recur, indicating that tumors with faster cell cycle were difficult to control by carbon beam radiation. C-ions are one of the high LET particles and possess low oxygen enhancement ratio. PO2 pressure of tumor tissues were measured directly with Japanese apparatus before and 1 week after initiation of radiation. Local control of oxygenated tumors showed better local control than hypoxic tumors in photon therapy. However, in carbon beam therapy, there was no significant difference between oxic and hypoxic tumors. We confirmed low OER effect of carbon beam therapy by patients tumor materials. (author abst.) |
